What does a Pacific Time Zone map actually show?
The zone stretches from the ocean inland to a jagged boundary with Mountain Time. That line cuts through the middle of Idaho, traces Nevada’s border with Utah, and runs down the spine of Baja California. Northward it covers most of British Columbia. Southward it takes in the western edge of Baja California state.
The zone runs on UTC−8 during standard time (PST) and UTC−7 during daylight time (PDT). Clocks spring forward the second Sunday of March and fall back the first Sunday of November.
US states fully inside the zone
Two states sit entirely within Pacific Time:
- California. Every county runs on the same clock.
- Washington. No exceptions, no split counties.
Oregon is almost wholly inside the zone. Malheur County, on the Idaho border, uses Mountain Time. It is the single carve-out.
Where Nevada and Idaho split
Two states straddle the line.
Nevada: Almost all of it uses Pacific Time. One town does not: West Wendover, on the Utah line, runs on Mountain Time. The boundary follows the edge of Elko County.
Idaho: The northern panhandle belongs to Pacific Time. Coeur d’Alene, Moscow, and Lewiston all sit inside it. The Salmon River forms the dividing line. South of that river, Idaho switches to Mountain Time. Boise, the capital, is on Mountain Time.
| State | Pacific Time portion | Mountain Time portion |
|---|---|---|
| Nevada | All except West Wendover | West Wendover only |
| Idaho | Panhandle north of Salmon River | Everything south of the Salmon River |
British Columbia and the Peace River exception
Most of British Columbia uses Pacific Time. Vancouver, Victoria, and Surrey all share the same clock.
The Peace River region in the northeast runs on Mountain Time year-round with no DST. Fort St. John sits inside that zone. The line follows the Rocky Mountain foothills.
Yukon uses Mountain Standard Time all year. No daylight saving. Geographically it aligns with Pacific Time; legally it does not.
Mexico’s border zone and the DST carve-out
Baja California state runs on Pacific Time. Tijuana, Mexicali, and Ensenada all use it.
Mexico abolished DST nationwide in October 2022. Border municipalities that share a metro area with US cities kept it. Tijuana matches San Diego. Mexicali matches Calexico. Both follow the same DST dates as Los Angeles.
Baja California Sur, the southern half of the peninsula, uses Mountain Time. It is not part of this zone.
Which time zones border the Pacific Time Zone map?
Two zones sit next to Pacific Time.
Mountain Time (UTC−7/−6). One hour ahead. The boundary cuts through Idaho, Nevada, and Baja California.
Alaska Time (UTC−9/−8). One hour behind. The Alaska panhandle runs on Alaska Time, not Pacific Time. Anchorage sits two hours behind Los Angeles in winter.
Hawaii uses Hawaii-Aleutian Time (UTC−10). Two hours behind Pacific Time in winter. Hawaii skips DST entirely.
Major cities on the Pacific Time Zone map
| City | State/Province | Country | Population | IANA zone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles | California | US | 3,820,914 | America/Los_Angeles |
| San Diego | California | US | 1,404,452 | America/Los_Angeles |
| San Jose | California | US | 997,368 | America/Los_Angeles |
| San Francisco | California | US | 827,526 | America/Los_Angeles |
| Seattle | Washington | US | 780,995 | America/Los_Angeles |
| Portland | Oregon | US | 652,503 | America/Los_Angeles |
| Las Vegas | Nevada | US | 641,903 | America/Los_Angeles |
| Vancouver | British Columbia | CA | 662,248 | America/Vancouver |
| Tijuana | Baja California | MX | 1,922,523 | America/Tijuana |
| Mexicali | Baja California | MX | 1,032,686 | America/Tijuana |
Three IANA zones define Pacific Time: America/Los_Angeles, America/Vancouver, and America/Tijuana. All three follow the same DST schedule.
Which cities are in the Pacific Time Zone?
Los Angeles tops the list at 3,820,914 people. Tijuana holds 1,922,523. San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas, Vancouver, and Mexicali all run on the same clock. Fresno (542,107), Sacramento (524,943), and Long Beach (474,140) sit inside the zone too. Ensenada, at 443,807, rounds out the major population centers.
The zone covers three countries, two US states split down the middle, and one Canadian province with a corner carved out. A map that paints the whole West Coast one colour misses the border towns, the panhandle, and the Peace River country.
