A map of the Pacific coast tells you nothing about who sets their watch to Pacific Time. Alaska runs on its own zone. British Columbia’s Peace River region keeps Mountain Time. And Arizona, the guess most people get wrong, stays on Mountain Standard Time all year.

Pacific Time (PST in winter, PDT in summer, UTC−8/UTC−7) stretches from the California, Mexico border north through the US West Coast into southwestern Canada. Two surprises sit inside that boundary: nearly all of Nevada, and a sliver of northern Idaho.

Here is the full list of major cities, scannable by state.

California cities on Pacific time

Every major city in California sits in the Pacific Time Zone. The whole state runs on the same clock.

City Population
Los Angeles 3,820,914
San Diego 1,404,452
San Jose 997,368
San Francisco 827,526
Fresno 542,107
Sacramento 524,943
Long Beach 474,140

Los Angeles is the largest city in the zone. San Francisco, Sacramento, and San Diego all tick in sync.

See current time in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Washington state cities

Washington is entirely Pacific Time. No exceptions.

City Population
Seattle 780,995

Seattle is the second-largest city in the US portion of the zone. Spokane, in the eastern part of the state, stays on Pacific Time. Some travellers assume it shifts to Mountain. It does not.

Current time in Seattle.

Oregon cities

Oregon is all Pacific Time except for a tiny portion of Malheur County near the Idaho border, which follows Mountain Time. Every major city is Pacific.

City Population
Portland 652,503

Portland is the largest city in Oregon and the third-largest in the US Pacific zone. Salem and Eugene follow the same DST schedule.

Nevada cities on Pacific time

Most of Nevada is in the Pacific Time Zone, including its two largest cities.

City Population
Las Vegas 641,903

Las Vegas is Pacific Time. Its inland location makes people assume Mountain. It is not. The entire state except the town of West Wendover (which uses Mountain Time to align with Utah) is Pacific.

Current time in Las Vegas.

Idaho cities on Pacific time

Idaho is split. The state capital Boise and most of southern Idaho use Mountain Time. Only the northern panhandle, the portion that touches Washington and Oregon, uses Pacific Time.

Major towns on Pacific Time in Idaho:

  • Coeur d'Alene
  • Moscow (home of University of Idaho)
  • Lewiston

No large Idaho city is on Pacific Time. Boise, the largest, is Mountain.

British Columbia cities (Canada)

Most of British Columbia uses Pacific Time. The exception is the Peace River region, on Mountain Time year-round.

City Population
Vancouver 662,248
Surrey 568,322

Vancouver is the largest Canadian city in the zone. Its DST schedule matches the US exactly: clocks change on the same dates.

Current time in Vancouver.

Baja California border cities (Mexico)

Mexico abolished DST nationwide in October 2022. Border municipalities in Baja California kept it to stay synchronized with US Pacific Time. These cities follow the America/Tijuana IANA zone, which matches America/Los_Angeles exactly.

City Population
Tijuana 1,922,523
Mexicali 1,032,686
Ensenada 443,807

Tijuana is the second-largest city in the entire Pacific Time Zone after Los Angeles. Its time is identical to San Diego’s, right across the border.

Current time in Tijuana.

Cities often mistaken for Pacific Time

These cities are commonly misidentified as Pacific Time.

  • Phoenix, Arizona: Mountain Standard Time year-round. In summer, Phoenix sits on the same clock as Pacific Daylight Time (UTC−7). That half-year match causes endless confusion.
  • Boise, Idaho: Mountain Time, not Pacific.
  • Anchorage, Alaska: Alaska Time (UTC−9/−8). One hour behind.
  • Calgary, Alberta: Mountain Time.
  • Denver, Colorado: Mountain Time.

Arizona is the most frequent error. Because Arizona skips DST, it mirrors Pacific Time for half the year. The zone is officially Mountain.

Which states and provinces use Pacific Time?

State/Province Pacific Time? Key city
California Yes Los Angeles
Washington Yes Seattle
Oregon Yes Portland
Nevada Yes (except West Wendover) Las Vegas
Idaho Only northern panhandle Coeur d'Alene
British Columbia Yes (except Peace River) Vancouver
Baja California (Mexico) Yes (border DST exception) Tijuana
Arizona No (Mountain Time) Phoenix

If you are scheduling a meeting and the person is in Boise, Phoenix, Calgary, or Denver, do not assume Pacific Time. Check the Pacific Time Zone explained page for the full boundary map.

Which cities should double-check their time zone?

If you live in northern Idaho, the Peace River region of BC, or West Wendover, Nevada, you are the exception. Your neighbours use a different zone. When a meeting invite says “Pacific Time,” confirm whether it applies to you. It probably does not. Use Mountain Time instead.
