How late is too late to phone Los Angeles?

Offices across the Pacific zone open between 08:00 and 09:00 and wind down by 17:00. Banks keep 09:00 to 17:00, some branches Saturday 09:00 to 13:00. Government desks run 08:00 to 17:00 weekdays. For a personal call, dial between 09:00 and 20:00 PT. Ringing before 08:00 or after 21:00 PT usually gets voicemail, or worse.

Lunch runs 11:30 to 13:30. Skip it for business calls.

The zone uses Pacific Standard Time (PST, UTC−8) in the colder months and Pacific Daylight Time (PDT, UTC−7) in the warmer months. Clocks spring forward on the second Sunday of March and fall back on the first Sunday of November. In 2026: forward 8 March, back 1 November. The gap to other zones shifts by an hour for places that do not observe DST. Japan and India stay fixed, so the offset changes. Australia runs opposite seasons, so its DST moves the other way.

Phoning from Eastern Time: the 3-hour gap

The commonest cross-coast dial. Eastern Time sits 3 hours ahead of Pacific, always. When New York shows 12:00, San Francisco shows 09:00.

Dial 11:00 to 17:00 ET (08:00 to 14:00 PT). That window catches the West Coast workday from start through early afternoon. A 09:00 ET ring lands at 06:00 PT. Most people are not awake. An 18:00 ET ring hits 15:00 PT: possible, but many desks empty by 17:00.

For a deeper breakdown, see Pacific Time to Eastern Time: 3 Hours Across the US.

Phoning from Central and Mountain Time

Central Time runs 2 hours ahead of Pacific. Mountain Time runs 1 hour ahead.

From Central (Chicago, Dallas): dial 10:00 to 17:00 CT (08:00 to 15:00 PT). Before 10:00 CT equals before 08:00 PT. Too early.

From Mountain (Denver, Phoenix): dial 09:00 to 17:00 MT (08:00 to 16:00 PT). Phoenix stays on Mountain Standard Time all year, so in July it matches Pacific Daylight Time (both UTC−7). A July ring from Phoenix is effectively same-zone.

Phoning from the UK and Europe

The UK sits 8 hours ahead of Pacific all year. Both zones observe DST; the transition dates differ slightly but the 8-hour gap holds.

Dial 13:00 to 18:00 UK time (05:00 to 10:00 PT). That puts your afternoon into their early morning. A 13:00 UK ring hits 05:00 PT: too early for most. By 14:00 UK (06:00 PT) you catch early risers. 16:00 UK (08:00 PT) is the sweet spot. 18:00 UK (10:00 PT) still works. At 19:00 UK (11:00 PT) lunch starts to intrude.

Never dial at 09:00 UK time. That is 01:00 PT.

Paris runs 9 hours ahead of Pacific in both winter and summer. Dial 17:00 to 20:00 Paris time (08:00 to 11:00 PT). A 14:00 Paris ring hits 05:00 PT: too early.

Best time to phone Pacific Time from India and Asia

On 15 January 2026 (PST), Mumbai is 13.5 hours ahead. On 15 July 2026 (PDT), Mumbai is 12.5 hours ahead. The gap shifts by one hour depending on whether Pacific is on standard or daylight time.

Your morning hits their late evening. A 09:00 IST ring lands at 19:30 PT the prior day in January, or 20:30 PT in July. Both miss the business day.

The workable window: dial 20:00 to 22:00 IST. In January that lands 06:30 to 08:30 PT. In July it lands 07:30 to 09:30 PT. That is the Pacific early workday.

From Tokyo, which has no DST, the gap is 17 hours in January and 16 hours in July. Dial 17:00 to 19:00 JST. In January that hits 00:00 to 02:00 PT: no real overlap. In July it hits 01:00 to 03:00 PT: still overnight. Japan to Pacific is a hard pair. For a live conversation, the person in Pacific will need to dial early morning their time, hitting Tokyo evening.

Best time to phone Pacific Time from Australia

Sydney is 19 hours ahead of Pacific in January (PST) and 17 hours ahead in July (PDT). Australia's DST runs opposite to the US, so the gap shrinks when Pacific is on daylight time.

Dial 09:00 to 12:00 Sydney time. In January that lands 14:00 to 17:00 PT the prior day. In July it lands 16:00 to 19:00 PT the prior day. Both catch the tail of the Pacific workday.

Avoid 16:00 Sydney time. That hits 21:00 PT the prior day in January, 23:00 PT in July. Too late.

Do weekends and holidays change the best time to phone Pacific Time?

Yes. Skip business calls on these Pacific Time federal holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day (third Monday in January), Presidents' Day (third Monday in February), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Juneteenth (19 June), Independence Day (4 July), Labor Day (first Monday in September), Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday in November), and Christmas Day (25 December). Banks and government offices close. Many businesses follow suit. You will hit voicemail.

Weekends are for personal calls only. Same window: no earlier than 09:00, no later than 20:00 PT.

The 'golden hour' for international calls

The golden hour is the narrow window when business hours overlap between Pacific Time and another zone. For most international pairs, the window is tight: one to two hours.

Here is the golden hour for each major pair:

Your location Your time Pacific time Notes
Eastern US 11:00-14:00 ET 08:00-11:00 PT Best overlap for meetings
UK 16:00-17:00 UK 08:00-09:00 PT One hour window
Europe (Paris) 17:00-18:00 CET 08:00-09:00 PT One hour window

Japan 17:00-19:00 JST 00:00-02:00 PT winter; 01:00-03:00 PT summer No real overlap
Australia (Sydney) 09:00-12:00 AEDT 14:00-17:00 PT previous day (summer); 16:00-19:00 PT (winter) Works for end of day

The golden hour for calls from outside North America is almost always the Pacific morning, 08:00 to 10:00 PT. That means you dial during your late afternoon or early evening.
